SPECIAL EXHIBITS at photo MIAMI

Optical Borderline: Housing Development Project

Héctor Madera González

neon

Optical Borderline: Housing Development Project by Héctor Madera González is a multimedia piece that pays homage to Puerto Rican culture and comments on aspects of this culture that have been in flux since the 1970s. Using neon lights, slide projections, and wall paint, Madera creates evocative installations that trace a pattern based on antique fences found in homes from the 1950s-1970s.

Sex, Gum, Corruption and a Dead Pony

Web-based project by FGA for photo MIAMI 2007

The FGA deals with thematic exhibitions, conceptual practice, photography, sound art, and the use of the paranormal and the fake by claiming the essence of dead personalities, (e.g. Julia Child), in our shows.

For photo MIAMI 2007, FGA has invited John Neff, (Chicago) and Ozzie Forbes (Argentinian artist based in Puerto Rico), among other international artists, to develop a virtual archive of images that investigate the role of corruption in contemporary society. The works featured comment on political, corporate, aesthetic corruption, and sociological corruption in a variety of media, including college, video, and sound.

The project will be continuously screened in the photo MIAMI lounge as well posted in on the website.

SPECIAL EVENTS at photo MIAMI

Enemy of the Good

Friday, December 7, 7pm

ARTIST: Janet Biggs
MEDIA: Mixed Media Performance
SPONSORED BY: Claire Oliver Gallery, New York

Premiering at photo MIAMI 2007 is multi-media artist Janet Biggs’ powerful new work exploring control, obsession and Man’s relentless pursuit of perfection. In this innovative performance, Biggs proposes new relationships between aesthetics and strength as well as action and desire. The Artist explores the boundaries of gravity and personal limits – and by extension, the boundaries of control and free will.

With its title taken from Voltaire -- “the perfect is the enemy of the good” -- Biggs’ examines Man’s driving desire to transcend constraints in His unending search for perfection. With nods to Busby Berkeley’s lavish musicals, the photographs of Muybridge and Santiago Calatrava’s obsessive architecture, the work explores the isolation and obsession required to make something difficult appear effortless and transcendent.

Biggs’ work will be presented as a performance with prestigious Van Cliberg Prize winner José Luis Hernández-Estrada on grand piano and cellist/composer William Martin, along with Equestrian Andres Rodrigues. Mr. Hernández-Estrada is also the subject of Claire Oliver Gallery’s exhibit of photographs and video installations at photo MIAMI.
